Romania, Ukraine relaunch presidential joint committee
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and his visiting Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko signed on Thursday a protocol on the relaunch of the bilateral presidential joint committee.
Iohannis said this protocol makes it possible to take steps to solve old issues on bilateral agenda, such as the Bastroe Canal in the Danube Delta.

"The committee will be an instrument of imprinting t he political will and the necessary impulse to solve the issues on the bilateral agenda, allowing us to fully capitalize the cooperation potential that exists between our countries,"Iohannis told a joint press conference with Poroshenko who is on a one-day official visit to Romania.

The Bastroe Canal is an old dispute between the two countries as Romania declares that Ukraine broke several international and bilateral agreements by starting work on the canal, which, Romania believes, will have negative consequences on the Danube Delta.

The talks between the two presidents also focused on better enforcement of the border traffic agreement, the progress of infrastructure projects and the opening of new border crossings.

Iohannis also reassured his country`s "strong and constant support"to Ukraine`s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

He assured at the same time that Romania is ready to support Ukraine in its domestic reforms needed to honour its commitments upon its association with the European Union.

Poroshenko said he supported Romania`s initiative for the creation of a NATO flotilla in the Black Sea zone.

Poroshenko`s schedule in Bucharest also included a lunch with Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, as well as meetings with two speakers of the parliament chambers.
