AZERI SPEAKER SLAMS PRESIDENT OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Oktay Asadov, speaker of Azerbaijan’s parliament, accused Martin Shultz, president of the European Parliament, of making “non-ethical” and “non-objective” statements about Azerbaijan.

The criticism by the European Parliament President Martin Schulz against Azerbaijan is groundless, the speaker of Azerbaijan’s parliament the Milli Majlis, Ogtay Asadov said Nov. 28.

He made the remarks at a plenary session of the parliament.Speaker accused Schultz of criticizing Azerbaijan unfairly, for “violation” civil society activists’ rights.

Asadov said the European Parliament’s leadership must first pay attention to anti-semitism, discrimination against migrants, and police arbitrariness in the countries of the EU.

“There are only a few Muslim countries in Europe, and they are constantly criticized,” Asadov said.

Asadov noted that Schulz says he allegedly appealed to the Azerbaijani state about the arrival of a parliamentary group to the country, to deal with the issue of Leyla Yunusova, the head of an Azerbaijani NGO.

“But this is an obvious lie! No one appealed on this issue to the Milli Majlis, or the government of Azerbaijan. According to our information, they were not even able to create such a group,” the speaker said.

Asadov noted that the European Parliament takes a biased and double-standard approach toward Azerbaijan.

“Our MPs have repeatedly tried to hold discussions for informing them about the truth and ask the reason for this biased approach. Unfortunately, it didn’t help. Finally, I wrote a letter to Schulz, but he didn`t reply. And now they teach us culture? We will treat them as they treat us. Now, as the session of the European Parliament started, they are expressing opinions and statements on our country that don’t reflect the truth. Schulz again took a biased approach. A lie at a meeting of such an influential organization as the European Parliament gives no credit to any politician,” Asadov stressed.
