Azerbaijan was among the fastest developing countries until 2014, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in his opening speech at the 7th Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations in Baku Apr. 26.
“Despite the occupation, we have managed to ensure the development of Azerbaijan,” the president said.

The head of state recalled that Azerbaijan’s women were enfranchised at the beginning of the 20th century.

Azerbaijan has rich energy resources, President Aliyev said, noting that the main purpose is to convert the “black gold” into human capital.

“Reforms show that we have a diversified economy, and our dependence on oil and gas is reducing,” he added.

The president stressed the significance of the Southern Gas Corridor.

“The East-West transport corridor will be a new Silk Road. Azerbaijan is also actively involved in the creation of the North-South Corridor,” he said.

“We are working on creating the best forms of cooperation,” President Aliyev said, noting that multiculturalism and tolerance will improve the lives of the peoples in the region.
