"In April 2016, the Internal Security Department detained eight radicalised male Bangladeshi nationals under the Internal Security Act (ISA). They were all employed in the local construction and marine industries," the press release read.
According to the press release, all men aged between 26 and 34 are suspected of raising funds to purchase weapons to carry out attacks in Bangladesh and recruit their compatriots to take part in terrorist activities. The investigation has not received any information proving the suspects intended to carry out terrorist attacks in Singapore.
The detained citizens of Bangladesh were also planning to head for Syria to join the Daesh terrorist group but abandoned those plans.
"However, as they felt that it would be difficult for them to make their way to Syria, they focused their plans instead on returning to Bangladesh to overthrow the democratically-elected government through the use of force, establish an Islamic state in Bangladesh and bring it under Daesh self-declared caliphate," the press release read.
"Daesh" is a terrorist group outlawed in Russia and the United States among other states. The infamous group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate on the territories under its control.
