The quake struck at 00:41 GMT, about 57 miles east of Ile Hunter at a depth of approximately 10 km (6.2 miles), USGS said.
There were no immediate reports on damage or casualties. No tsunami warning was issued.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred Monday off the coast of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
