Dangers originating from Metsamor NPP
`Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) can be used in a wide range of military applications. If the relevant international organizations and world leaders do not put pressure on Armenia on time, the dangers originating from the plant might be realized against Azerbaijan.`

The member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, head of the laboratory of the Institute of Radiation Problems of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Muslim Gurbanov told aforementioned to Trend, AzVision.az reports.

Though, Metsamor NPP`s operation term has been expired, the plant still in functioning. The plant is belongs to the 1st generation - water-cooled nuclear reactors, he said.

`The dangers originating from the Metsamor NPP can be divided into several groups: Firstly, the lack of the control over the station gives cause for smuggling of nuclear materials and the usage of them for terrorist purposes. The smuggling group, which was arrested in Georgia one month ago aimed to deliver highly enriched uranium and cesium to illegal groups in the Middle East and sell them secretly which cost million dollars in black market.`

Large amount of radioactive waste have been collected in the Metsamor NPP. Special dams that were built to maintain those nuclear wastes have also finished their useful life. Besides, Armenia does not hide its aim on usage of nuclear materials for the military purposes. Currently, the preparation of `dirty bombs` is quite real and dangerous fact, he said.

Gurbanov said that `dirty bombs` prepared from the nuclear materials differ from common A-bomb. `Dirty bombs`cause high natural radiation background and they do not explode. They are combined with missiles, rockets and delivered to necessary areas. A major program on the use of `dirty bombs` was available in the former USSR during the mid-1950s. Therefore, Armenia had experience on the preparation of such kind of bombs, because the specialist worked on that field were mainly Armenians.

`Dirty bombs` also target the mass extermination of the population. Using the bomb, military objects - its personnel and vehicles can also be annihilated, the professor added.

The Armenian-occupied territories of Azerbaijan are suitable areas for the burial of nuclear wastes. Moreover, the nuclear wastes of the plant are dumping into the Caspian Sea through Kura-Aras rivers, the specialist concluded.
