Amnesty Act to apply to one-third of all prisoners in Azerbaijan
The Amnesty Act will apply to one-third of all prisoners in Azerbaijan, Ali Huseynli, MP, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on law policy and state building, said on Friday.
He made the remarks at the parliament’s special meeting on the discussions of the bill on “Amnesty Act” submitted by Azerbaijan’s first lady, president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, MP Mehriban Aliyeva on the occasion of 28 May – Republic Day.

In this respect, for every 100,000 people Azerbaijan is ahead of the former Soviet states and is on a par with European countries, Huseynli said.

He noted that among the prisoners released under previous amnesty acts were not repeated criminals, and this fact proves that the amnesty acts have achieved their goals.

Addressing the discussions, Ziyafat Asgarov, first vice-speaker of the parliament, said that 61 pardon decrees and 10 amnesty acts have been adopted in the country since 1995.
