The heads of government of Greece and Turkey agreed to expand gas pipelines network to supply gas from the field "Shah Deniz II" to Europe
Greece and Turkey are aimed to promote regional cooperation in the energy sector, particularly through the construction and expansion of the network of gas pipelines, it was said in a joint statement issued at the end of the third session of the Supreme Council of cooperation of Greece and Turkey, AzVision.az reports citing Itar-Tass.
The meeting was attended by members of the councils of ministers of the two countries.

The document, in particular, notes that "Greece and Turkey aimed at further development of bilateral and regional cooperation in the energy sector, especially with regard to gas pipelines and successful precedent (Greek-Turkish) pipeline ITGI, which runs from October 2007 and paved the way for closer cooperation. "

"Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the Trans-Anatolian Gas Pipeline (TANAP) connected with each other and, of course, are the most effective - in terms of cost - route to transport natural gas from the Caspian region to Western Europe (after 2020)," - said in a statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Greece Evangelos Venizelos said on Friday in his address to the forum held in Athens businessmen of the two countries that Greece attaches great importance to the construction of the Trans-Adriatic pipeline and the creation of the Southern Energy Corridor. "And after the recent events in connection with the" South Stream "it all gets additional critical dimension in terms of economic development, as well as international policy," - said Greek Deputy Prime Minister.

Greek-Turkish section of the connecting pipeline ITGI (Interconnector Turkey-Greece-Italy) was opened in 2007 for the supply of natural gas from the Azerbaijani field "Shah Deniz II" to Europe via Turkey, Greece and Italy.

Underwater section from Greece to Italy to design, but its construction has not yet started due to competing with him the project Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). The planned Trans Adriatic Pipeline was approved in June 2013 as a priority route of gas supplies from the field "Shah Deniz II". TAP, a length of about 520 km, will be held on the territory of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Greece and Albania to Italy. The initial capacity of the TAP - 10 billion cubic meters with a possible extension of up to 20 billion cubic meters.

According to experts, gas transportation infrastructure between Greece and Turkey could be involved and the potential transfer of large volumes of Russian gas, if it will come to Turkey as part of a new project to build a gas pipeline from Russia instead of "South Stream".

During the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ankara between "Gazprom" and Turkish company Botas signed a memorandum of understanding on construction of a gas pipeline across the Black Sea to Turkey of 63 bcm of gas per year. 14 billion cubic meters of gas intended for delivery to Turkey, the rest - about 50 billion cubic meters of gas - will be delivered to the border of Turkey and Greece.
