"The explosives were placed in the pulpit of the mosque and exploded during the Friday prayers time," Atallah Khugiani, spokesman for the provincial governor, told Afghanistan’s 1TV channel.
The explosion occurred in the central mosque in the Rodat district of the turbulent eastern Nangarhar province on the border with Pakistan at a time when Muslims celebrate the holy month Ramadan.
There were no immediate reports of a militant group claiming responsibility for the attack, but in the past months Afghanistan has experienced rising Taliban insurgency, which is also challenged by the Daesh terror group, outlawed in Russia and many other countries.
