One cannot measure the progress of a nation state without considering the socio-political landscape from which it grows.

No country will ever be entirely impervious to reproach, but what sets certain nation states above others, is the uncompromising will to progress in the right direction. Azerbaijan is one such country taking great strides to carry itself beyond the many geo-political obstacles that it faces, closer to Europe’s progressive model of democracy. Azerbaijan is determined to secure a future of peace, equality and tolerance. We are transforming Azerbaijan into a country where national minorities are free and equal, and the various religious sects are united in respect for one another.

Azerbaijan and Europe

With its comprehensive agenda, Azerbaijan continually strives for better relations with the European Union. This is in an effort to both strengthen its economy and political structure, and grow itself in the direction of European values and institutions.

Azerbaijan is part of both the Council of Europe, of which it has ratified 50 treaties, and the European Neighbourhood Policy. It is also currently developing an energy policy in partnership with the European Union (a proposed pipeline to connect the Caspian oil supply with Europe), and has a number of projects being carried out in cooperation with Europe (Europe supports Azerbaijan’s state-sponsored program for the increased use of alternative and renewable energy sources). The European community has also developed the National Indicative Program, an aid plan intended to develop and enhance Azerbaijan’s government agencies, infrastructure and foreign relations.

While Europe may still have reservations about Azerbaijan’s eligibility to be fully integrated into the European Union, Azerbaijan is working towards bringing about positive change, and addressing the latter’s criticisms as points for greater progress.

Innovative Approach

Azerbaijan’s transition from a "Middle Eastern/Post-Soviet Turbulent Zone" to a democracy is attributed largely to the our innovative approach. Apart from developing Azerbaijan’s political and economic ties with Europe, the government is also responsible for revolutionising public services. Under the title of ASAN, the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations is a direct response to the desperate need for a regulatory body capable of structuring, standardising and watchdogging the multitude of services required for the effective functioning of a state. There are reportedly now over 50 such services.

Education in Azerbaijan

While it is evident that this kind of innovative and progressive approach is the foundation of contemporary Azerbaijan, one should then question our dedication to empowering the country’s youth in the same vein. We support western systems of education. And we are resolute about the significance of human resources for developing and sustaining a nation. We furthermore support students pursuing university-level qualifications abroad where they are guaranteed well-recognised degrees. Already there is a noticeable Azerbaijani student community in Europe and the United Kingdom.

Gender Equality

It may be surprising to note that Azerbaijan ensured women’s right to vote as early as 1918, an impressive 53 years before even the globally-renowned democracy of Switzerland saw fit to acknowledge gender equality. And this policy of equal rights has only been enhanced over the years.

Azerbaijan’s Growing Economy

It is one of only a few countries in the region to provide free internet. You only need to book a stay at one of the capitals many international hotels to realise just how far this country has come in the last 20 years. In this comparatively short time, Azerbaijan has managed to shed its image, uplift the economy, and establish itself as a noteworthy player in the regional economy. And with innovative leadership ardently working for positive change, Azerbaijan stands proud in the international community as a country transforming itself into a model of tolerance and unlimited potential.
