Azerbaijan reveals its priorities in fight against radical religious groups
Mubariz Gurbanli, chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, has specified three priorities in country
According to him, the first priority includes legal actions taken by law enforcement agencies.

“It includes the Interior Ministry, the State Security Service, prosecuting bodies, and law enforcement agencies, all of which take decisive actions to detain radicalized religious groups and bring them to justice. Furthermore, the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations works together with the State Security Service to prevent dissemination of religious books promoting illegal doctrines of radical groups,” Gurbanli said.

He noted that the second priority has to do with economy.

“Some radical groups obtain money in illegal ways and spend them on radicalize youths and create networks. This is inadmissible, too,” the committee chairman said.

Gurbanli mentioned that the third priority is about ideologically educative efforts.

“This way, aimed at bringing down the base of radical groups, includes promotion and teaching of Islamic values and educative measures. The State Committee is doing this work first in cooperation with the Caucasian Muslims Office, and also through the media, various conferences, seminars and other events,” said the committee chairman.

He added that as part of the efforts against religious radicalism the State Committee has so far signed and carried out joint action plan in cooperation with the ministry of defense, internal affairs, education, and youth and sports, the Republic Prosecutor`s Office, the State Security Service, the State Border Service, the Justice Ministry`s Penitentiary Service, the State Committee on Refugees and IDPs, the Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, the Council of State Support to NGOs under the Auspices of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
