Game Of Thrones pulls in a record-breaking 8.9m viewers - VIDEO
It was a gripping season six finale, settling a lot of old scores, killing off major characters and drawing up new battle lines.
And some 8.9 million viewers sat down to watch HBO`s Game Of Thrones on Sunday evening, a new ratings record for the gore and sex-laced fantasy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The episode, titled Winds Of Winter, trumped last summer`s finale by nearly 800,000 for a new record.

And that number will grow once HBO tallies up overall audience figures combining the original TV telecast, TV encores, DVR, on-Demand and streams on HBO Go and HBO Now.

Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue is pervasive. Across the sea, the last members of the previous and deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also scheming to regain the throne. The friction between the houses Stark, Lannister and Baratheon, and with the remaining great houses Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, and Tyrell, leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war and political confusion, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night`s Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond.

Using those figures, episodes of GOT have been averaging 23.3 million viewers in season six.

That`s up from the last season, when HBO had just launched its streaming service.

THR also pointed out that the live-plus-three day ratings for the original TV showing have hovered just over the 10-million mark for the entire season.

The show`s numbers have been increasing every year since the season one finale raked in 3 million same day viewers in 2011.

However, while GOT is still behind AMC`s The Walking Dead, TV`s biggest show, it`s the second-biggest player on cable this year.

The fantasy series, set in mythical medieval lands, is based on George R.R. Martin`s best-selling book series, A Song Of Ice And Fire.

Meanwhile showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have confirmed that there are, at most, only 15 episodes of GOT left, in an interview with Deadline, published online on Monday.

The seventh season starts next April.
