“It [the corridor] will facilitate trade by cutting the cost of transportation, providing an alternative to the sea route passing through the Suez Canal, and by integrating markets,” Dadkhah told Trend by email.

According to the expert, if the project is efficiently implemented at reasonable cost, the investment would boost the economies involved.

Dadkhah also pointed out that the project participants should avoid any act or statement that could be interpreted as trying to get political advantage using the economic connection brought about by the transport route.

“It is important that the route be viewed as a business advantage that has to be guarded. A wrongful act could entice the participants to go back to the old route, thus making the investment in the transport project uneconomical,” Dadkhah said.

The International North-South Transportation Corridor was one of the main topics of the meeting between Azerbaijani, Russian and Iranian presidents on Aug. 8 in Baku.

The North-South transportation corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe to South-East Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

At the initial stage, the North-South corridor will transport 5 million tons of cargo per year with further expansion of transportation to over 10 million tons.
