Prisoners can vote in upcoming referendum in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijani citizens, who are serving their sentences at the Penitentiary Service facilities, will also be able to vote in the upcoming referendum, said the country’s Deputy Justice Minister Azar Jafarov.
He made the remarks Aug. 18 commenting on the Sept. 26 referendum at a meeting with the heads of district election commissions.

Azerbaijan’s penitentiary facilities are sufficiently progressive in terms of protecting the rights of persons serving their sentences, Jafarov said.

Jafarov noted that on the referendum day, the voting at penitentiary facilities will be held transparently and with participation of the media and various international missions.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to hold a referendum Sept. 26 for making amendments to the country’s constitution.
