The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working to provide emergency, temporary housing to the thousands of residents forced from their homes during flooding that hit Baton Rouge late last week.
“Over $16.7 million has already been approved for temporary housing, emergency repairs for disaster survivors,” DHS announced on Friday.
DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson and FEMA Deputy Administrator Joseph Nimmich traveled to Baton Rouge on Thursday to survey the response and recovery efforts and meet with local officials.
Local media has reported over 40,000 homes have been damaged by the historic flooding. On Sunday the federal government issued a major disaster declaration, freeing up resources to go to the impacted areas.
