Erdogan, EU leaders mull visa cancellation
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, France’s President Francois Hollande and Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in a quadripartite format, the Anadolu Agency reported Sept.5.
The meeting was held during the G20 summit in China.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the cancellation of visa regime by the EU for Turkish citizens.

Following the quadripartite meeting, Erdogan and Hollande met in a bilateral format.

The EU and Turkey have agreed to cancel the visa regime, according to the Haberturk newspaper.

Reportedly, the agreement was reached during the recent meeting of foreign ministers of the EU countries.

The newspaper reported that the visa-free regime between the EU and Turkey will enter into force in early or late October 2016.

The European Commission proposed the EU to cancel the visa regime with Turkey May 4.

Earlier, Ankara cancelled the visa regime for the citizens of all the 28 EU countries on May 3, but the visa-free travel will be possible after the EU cancels the visa regime for Turkish citizens.

After cancellation of the visa regime, Turkish citizens will be able to stay without a visa for three months in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Greece.
