Authorities said all fires were under control on Tuesday but the exceptionally hot weather combined with high winds kept fire brigades on alert.
Lieutenant Michel Faelli, from the Aude battalion, said "our only fear is that the wind ... will rekindle the flames."
Between 800 and 1,000 hectares were destroyed in Aude, while authorities said 80 hectares burned in Tarn and 390 hectares near Marseille.
