The Security Council met on Friday after North Korea confirmed earlier in the day that it had carried out a nuclear test in the country`s northeast. The blast is believed to be the fifth and largest since Pyongyang began pursuing nuclear and ballistic missile programs, drawing condemnation from the international community. Council members also denounced the test, calling it a threat to international security.
According to the Council, the tests are in clear violation of its resolutions and the United Nations` nuclear nonproliferation protocols. Council members have frequently warned North Korea that further significant measures would be taken in response to additional nuclear tests.
