`Efforts to resolve Karabakh conflict fail due to Armenia`s destructive stance`
Efforts aimed at resolving the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict do not yield results due to Armenia`s destructive stance, said Ogtay Asadov, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament.

He made the remarks addressing the European Conference of presidents of parliament on Friday.

Azerbaijan`s Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven adjacent districts have been under occupation of the Armenian armed forces for 25 years, said the speaker, noting that Armenia`s occupying forces carried out a policy of ethnic cleansing in the occupied territories.

Asadov noted that about a million Azerbaijanis have been forced out of their homes as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which poses a threat to peace not only in the region, but also in the world.

“The clashes in April this year proved it once more. Armenia`s armed forces again resorted to provocation, shelling Azerbaijani troops and residential areas along the frontline. Azerbaijani armed forces had to open retaliatory fire to ensure the safety of civilian population. This has led to series causalities,” he recalled, stressing the need to settle all conflicts within the norms and principles of international law.

The speaker noted that the international law is superseded by the law of force in the world.

Asadov said that representatives of various nations have always lived in Azerbaijan in peace.

“In Azerbaijan, multicultural values are recognized at the state level. Doors of mosques, churches and synagogues in our country are always open. People are allowed to freely perform their religious rituals. The religious leaders in Azerbaijan always take a common position in dealing with important issues,” the speaker added.
