`Flag incident during Olympiad aimed at damaging Iran-Azerbaijan ties`

The display of the flag of the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic by an Armenian athlete on his shirt during a sports event in Iran was aimed at damaging bilateral ties between Iran and Azerbaijan, outgoing Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayeen told reporters in Baku Sept. 19.

The ambassador noted, the incident drew a strong reaction from the Iranian side.

“The organizing committee for sports events was seriously warned. Iran will receive sports teams who will come to Iran from Armenia under serious control. We don’t recognize the illegal Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” the ambassador stressed.

The flag incident took place during an Olympiad among Iran’s Armenian population. Georgia and Armenia had also been invited as guests.
