Michel Forst arrived in Azerbaijan Sept. 14 to study the human rights situation in the country.
The rapporteur said at the press conference that he met with lawyer, human rights defenders, journalists and political activists in Baku.
He thanked the government of Azerbaijan for cooperation.
“I’ve had meetings at the Presidential Administration, State Security Service, Supreme Court, Prosecutor General’s Office and Ombudsman`s Office. The main purpose of government is to protect the basic human rights and freedoms,” he said.
Forst stressed the need to improve the media environment in Azerbaijan.
He also underlined that in Azerbaijan the people have a wide access to the Internet and the number of social media users is on the rise.
The UN special rapporteur called on the government to establish dialogue with civil society.
“I am ready to continue constructive dialogue with the government of Azerbaijan. I’ve expressed the government my readiness to render technical assistance and continue cooperation,” he added.
