88.9% of voters supported constitutional amendments in Azerbaijan - US pollster
88.9 percent of voters have supported the constitutional amendments in Azerbaijan, according to the exit poll held by American firm Arthur J. Finkelstein & Associates, said the firm’s vice-president George Birnbaum at a press conference in Baku Sept. 26.
The US firm, in cooperation with the Citizens’ Labor Rights Protection League, held an exit poll during the referendum in Azerbaijan Sept. 26.

According to him, a total of 32,400 people were interviewed and this is a high figure.

“88.9% of the respondents voted in favor of the amendments. Structural changes in executive power won 87.3% support from voters. 89.7% of the respondents voted in favor of the articles on security and defense. 88.3% voted in favor of the modification on human rights. 86.6% supported the articles dealing with social welfare,” Birnbaum said.

The exit poll was conducted at 450 polling stations in 100 election constituencies by way of draw. The process involved 30 instructed supervisers, 900 interviewers, and 60 operators. The overall exit-poll voter turnout stood at 67.5%.

The referendum on making amendments to Azerbaijan’s Constitution kicked off at 8:00 am and wrapped up at 7:00 pm.

The referendum was declared valid.

As many as 117 international observers – MPs from over 30 countries as well as observers from various international organizations, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) – have been accredited by Azerbaijan’s CEC to observe the referendum. The total number of the observers is around 53,000.
