Despite occupation, Azerbaijan gaining strength – President Aliyev
Despite the occupation of its territories, Azerbaijan is gaining strength as an independent state, said Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

He made the remarks addressing the opening ceremony of the 5th Baku International Humanitarian Forum in Baku Sept. 29.

The president noted that Azerbaijan has made tremendous progress over 25 years.

He recalled that several years ago, Azerbaijan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN by receiving the support of 155 countries.

“Over the past thirteen years, more than 3,000 schools and 600 hospitals have been built in Azerbaijan,” said Ilham Aliyev. “More than 90 settlements have been built for Azerbaijani IPDs over the past years. Over 250,000 IDPs are provided with new houses.”

Azerbaijan has large foreign exchange reserves, said the president, stressing that serious measures are underway to reduce unemployment and poverty.

Poverty level in Azerbaijan stands at 5%m he added.

“We are proud of living independently for 25 years. Our destiny lies in our own hands and we don’t depend on anyone. We have built a beautiful country and it will be more beautiful”, said Ilham Aliyev.
