The animal was meant to be rescued alongside Raju, another elephant who moved millions around the world when he was photographed ‘crying’ following his release, in 2014.
Raju and Mohan spent several weeks tied next to each other in chains as young calves and were then subjected to abuse and beatings during their ‘training’ process, Wildlife SOS explains.
Mohan sadly ‘disappeared without a trace’ shortly after Raju was rescued but wads tracked down and rescued by the wildlife campaigners who also faced a court battle to free the elephant.
“Mohan has been on an incredibly long journey to freedom. He has endured decades of abuse and even experienced the wrath of angry mobs,” explained Wildlife SOS after his arrival at the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura.
“His right to be free has been debated and put on hold in court countless times. He has suffered alone and in silence for decades, in fragile health… and miraculously, he has survived. And now he will live the rest of his life as a free elephant.”
They added: “It is with immense joy that we welcome #Mohan into his new forever home.
“Everyone who stood strong through this long and often disheartening and dangerous fight for his freedom. Now he will never be abused, beaten or neglected in any way.”
Meanwhile, here is the heart-warming moment a delighted Raju met his adoptive family for the first time.
Last month, an elephant washed away from his herd during a flood was saved in a dramatic rescue.
