World Vegetarian Day & International Old Persons Day both fall on October 1
Saturday, October 1 is World Vegetarian Day,but not only this, it is also International Older Persons Day. This makes it the perfect time to celebrate the rising number of older vegetarians in the UK.
Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only charity in the world dedicated to improving the quality of life for older vegetarians and vegans. Whether you are a committed vegetarian, a fledgling meat reducer – or catering for either – VfL has just the right resources to help.

Amanda Woodvine of VfL said: "Three in ten people in Britain have cut down on meat, according to a recent survey. And over 65`s are leading the way. They are twice as likely to have reduced their meat consumption as 18 to 24-year-olds."

There is a broad number of reasons why this is and the majority are due to matters of health. Other reasons include the monetary - cutting down on meat will cut your shopping bill, some are concerned about animal welfare, while others are concerned on the food safety in relation to meat, as well as helping the environment.

There are already an estimated 300,000 vegetarians aged over 65 in the UK. Amanda said: "VfL offers a wide range of support, whatever your stage of meat-reduction. Perhaps you have more time to travel, and are seeking good meat-free eateries. Perhaps your family circumstances and budget have changed, and you`re now cooking for one. We have a range of resources to help, and even operate a grant scheme to help with independent living.

"With an estimated 6,000 vegetarians in UK care homes, VfL works closely with that sector to ensure they are offered a varied and nutritious diet. In short, we embrace and celebrate older vegetarians and their choice of diet!"

While World Vegetarian Day is a celebration of the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism, Older Persons Day is a time to pause and reflect on the achievements of older people. An opportunity to appreciate their contribution to society –and remember not to treat them as lesser members of society.
