Do your part: 99-year-old Brazilian woman gives `Lesson` in civic duty
In accordance with Brazilian legislation, people over the age of 70 are not obliged to vote; however, a 99-year-old woman from the southern city of Curitiba decided to go to the polls anyway to exercise her civic duty.
Brazil held municipal elections on Sunday, with candidates vying for thousands of posts in 5,568 cities.

The 99-year-old retiree Nyette Infante Araújo told Sputnik in an interview that she was interested in participating, even though she would have to use a cane.

"My voice was important. If I do not vote for my candidate, he will lose one vote. Getting a vote from each supporter will make him win," she said.

Every vote matters. And women have to do their civic duty as well as men do, the elderly lady believes:

"Before, women were not appreciated, but now they are. And it is very important for women to go and vote." Nyette Infante Araújo could become a great example to follow for those who think that they no longer need to care about anything:

"Many people do not attach importance to voting. But I think that all people should vote. If a person has already reached a certain age that does not mean that he or she no longer should do anything. I am old, but I take care of everything. I go to the bank, make payments and I do everything by myself."

The election in Curitiba is not over. There will be a second round to determine who will be the new mayor of the city, Rafael Greca, the candidate of the Party of National Mobilization (Partido da Mobilização Nacional, PMN) or Ney Leprevost, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Democrático, PSD). Nyette Infante Araújo confirmed to Sputnik, that she will once again come to the polls to perform her civic responsibility and cast her vote.
