Leopard cubs caught on camera in Azerbaijan
Leopard cubs have been caught on camera in the Zangazur National Park named after Hasan Aliyev in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources told APA.

The images have been shot by camera traps set up in the reserve area as part of the project titled “Restoration of leopard populations”, co-launched by the International Dialogue for Environmental Protection (IDEA) public association and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund.

Experts concluded that the process of return of Caucasian leopards to their habitats in Azerbaijan have intensified over the last five years.

Leopards were spotted in the Zangazur National Park named after Hasan Aliyev in September 2012, February-March 2013 and January 2014, and in the Hirkan National Park in October 2012 and May 2013. Five leopards (4 male, 1 female) and two leopard cubs have been spotted on camera in Nakhchivan in recent years.

The project seems to be producing good results. As a result of the monitoring conducted so far, leopards have been caught on camera many times.

Rare species of animals returning to their habitats in Azerbaijan is not accident. No serious scientific information was available about the presence of leopards in the country by early 2000. The research conducted over the last 16 years have enabled to specify leopard populations in Azerbaijan on there areas – the Hirkan National Park, on the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and arid landscapes around the Mingachevir reservoir.
