Myanmar gov`t enacts law repealing emergency provisions act
Myanmar government has enacted a law revoking the 66-year-old Emergency Provisions Act and the law was signed by President U Htin Kyaw, official report said Wednesday.
The government`s enactment of the law on Tuesday followed the approval of the bill by the parliament in late September.

The colonial-era Emergency Provisions Act was promulgated in 1950 when domestic conflicts emerged along with the country`s independence.

Although it was applied for military purposes, it was often used for political purposes later to quell dissent.

Moreover, it contravened the constitutional rights of a citizen, according to the Lower House Bill Committee which submitted the bill repealing the act to the parliament in August.
