Azerbaijan, Turkey are leaders in SGC implementation - Ilham Aliyev
Azerbaijan and Turkey are acting as leaders in the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor project (SGC), said Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev.
The president made the remarks addressing the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.

“We implement many of our important energy projects jointly with Turkey and these energy projects are of great importance for the world,” said President Aliyev.

The head of state recalled that the first offshore oil production took place in the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan 100 years ago.

Speaking about the Contract of the Century, the president said that this year Azerbaijan will mark the 25th anniversary of its independence.

“Energy projects played a major role in Azerbaijan`s independence,” said Ilham Aliyev. “Today there are three routes for transportation of the Azerbaijani oil to the world market. Two of them transport oil to the Black Sea, and the other to the Mediterranean Sea through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan. We, for the first time, connected the Mediterranean Sea with the Caspian Sea.”

The president pointed out that Azerbaijan`s proven gas reserves are estimated at 2.6 trillion cubic meters.

“There was a great need for the pipeline to transport these gas reserves. Azerbaijan and Turkey launched the TANAP project,” said President Aliyev. “The Southern Gas Corridor project is worth of 45 billion dollars. Azerbaijan and Turkey are showing their leadership qualities in this project`s implementation. Energy security is the national security issue of every state."
