The half-century war between the FARC and the Colombian government has claimed the lives of a quarter of a million people. The two parties began peace talks in November 2012 and signed a historic ceasefire agreement in Cuba on August 24.
"I have made the decision to extend the bilateral ceasefire until December 31," Santos said on Thursday in an address aired on national television.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has announced that the ceasefire regime with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group was being extended until December 31.
