Oil workers on strike at Kazakh oil field
Oil workers are on strike at the offshore Kalamkas-sea field of Kazakhstan, a source at the country’s oil and gas market told.

Oil workers are on strike at the offshore Kalamkas-sea field of Kazakhstan, a source at the country’s KazMunaiGas national oil and gas company told Trend on Jan.8 on condition of anonymity.

“Oil workers are on strike there. The whole management of the national company went there to clarify the circumstances and the reasons of the strike,” said the source.

The source reminded that the response to any such incidents will be instantaneous.

This is not the first strike of oil workers in Kazakhstan. Mass riots occurred in the oil town of Zhanaozen and the neighboring Shetpe village on Dec.16-17, 2011, leaving at least 14 people dead and over 80 injured.

The riots were triggered by the improper activities of the KazMunaiGas JSC management which did not want to make contact with the striking oil workers.

Kalamkas-sea field, located in 150 kilometers North-West from the Buzachi peninsula, was discovered on Sept.3, 2002.

The field is developed by the consortium of the oil companies involved in the North Caspian project.

The geological reserve of the Kalamkas-sea field is estimated at least 160 million metric tons of oil, while more optimistic forecasts say that this figure nears 1 billion metric tons.
