President does not exclude Azerbaijan’s accession to Eurasian Economic Union
The possibility of Azerbaijan’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in the future can’t be excluded, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview to Sputnik International News Agency.
The president noted the country feels confident in its current status.

“This issue has been discussed both by experts and elites of various countries for a long time. In principle, we feel confident with the current quality. We should observe further tendencies. If the alliance will be attractive, more will seek to join it. Thus, nothing can be excluded,” said President Aliyev.

According to him, Azerbaijan is following the processes taking place in the Eurasian space, where there are difficulties and certain claims.

“Today, the format of our economic and political cooperation with the EAEU member states is strong enough. Motivation is needed to pursue the path of integration in economic, social, political and other directions. We are now working in this direction,” said Azerbaijan’s president.

In general, the president said that Baku is satisfied with its current position.

“Over the past 13 years, we have managed to triple the GDP and to reduce the poverty rate from 49% (2003) to 5%. In fact, poverty is no more a social problem. The unemployment rate in the country amounts to 5%,” added Ilham Aliyev. “We have large amount of foreign exchange reserves, even exchange reserves of the Oil Fund are increasing this year in case of a decline in oil prices. We are spending funds sparingly and getting revenues from non-oil sector. Therefore, we are satisfied with both economic and political situation of our state.”
