He made the remarks at an event organized by the Veterans’ Organization of Azerbaijan in Baku Oct. 27.
Earlier, the graves of 206 Azerbaijanis killed during World War II had been discovered in Moldova.
“We were in close contact with the Russian and Moldovan defense ministries. It was initiated by the embassy staff,” said the former envoy. “We have visited all the cemeteries in Moldova and discovered graves of 206 Azerbaijanis. We collected all the data about them.”
Two divisions of Azerbaijanis were involved in the defense of Moldova, he recalled. “Of course, the death toll is more than 206. However, we have only their graves,” said Aliyev.
Addressing the event, Jalil Khalilov, deputy chairman of the Veterans’ Organization of Azerbaijan, noted that as a result of the researches conducted with the direct participation of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Moldova, especially former ambassador Namig Aliyev, the identity, date of birth, rank, date of military draft and graves of 206 Azerbaijanis, who were members of the 223rd infantry regiment and considered missing, were revealed and the archives of documents were specified.
Khalilov said the data about the 206 Azerbaijanis were sent to the commissariats they were drafted from.
He added that the Veterans’ Organization is working to clarify the fate of soldiers and officers who were killed and went missing during World War II, Karabakh and Afghanistan wars.
Former Azerbaijani ambassador to Moldova Namig Aliyev said the search for graves lasted more than 2 years. “We were in close contact with the Russian and Moldovan defense ministries. Two divisions of the Azerbaijanis took part in the defense of Moldova. More than 206 Azerbaijanis were killed in the war, but only their graves were detected,” he added.
