Iraq’s ancient city of Nimrud reduced to ruins by Islamic State group - VIDEO
In the days after the Iraqi army announced it had recaptured Nimrud from the Islamic State group, the full extent of destruction wrought by jihadists on the ancient city has gradually become apparent.
IS group militants filmed themselves as they lay waste to the 3,000-year-old Assyrian city, smashing artwork and other archaeological relics.

"The place was completely destroyed. The Islamic State group is destroying our heritage and fighting against humanity," an Iraqi soldier in Nimrud told FRANCE 24.

Iraq’s antiquities authority has said it is working on sending field teams to assess the damage, but there are fears some of the city’s treasures are beyond saving.
