Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines agree on launching joint military training
Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines reached an agreement on launching joint army training to further efforts aimed at protecting the Sulu Sea from rampant piracy, media reported on Friday.
According to Jakarta Post, since January 2017 the countries will conduct military training on their own, while joint training will start later in the year. The training is expected to take place in Indonesia’s Tarakan in North Kalimantan, Malaysia’s Tawao Island and the Philippines’ Bongao Island.

The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Indonesian, Malaysian and Philippine defense ministers on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting held this week in Laos. On Thursday, the Indonesian defense minister stressed that the initiative of the joint army training was a "part of a concrete action" taken by ASEAN member states to secure the region. ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
