Russia & Japan restore govt consultations ahead of Putin’s visit to Tokyo
Russia and Japan have revived consultations at the level of defense and foreign ministries in an attempt to “move forward with bilateral relations,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said, following the meeting with Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the APEC summit on Saturday.
He added that Russia also aims to boost trade and economic cooperation with Japan. Abe said he had taken under personal control preparations for Putin’s scheduled visit to Japan, first announced at the two leaders’ meeting in September, adding that he has been giving direct orders to Japan’s foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, with regard to the upcoming meeting.

Ahead of the visit scheduled for December 15, Kishida is to arrive in Moscow in early December.

"There are still issues to be talked through to prepare the ground for negotiations between the president [Putin] and the prime minister [of Japan Shinzo Abe]," Putin’s spokesman said, commenting on the meeting. Both Moscow and Tokyo are trying to find a compromise in the Kuril Islands dispute, which has prevented both sides from signing of a formal peace treaty since World War II
