Marconi’s death was followed later Sunday by shooting incidents in which two police officers on duty in other parts of the US were wounded – one in St. Louis, Missouri, the other on Florida’s Sanibel Island. In November, two police officers in the US state of Iowa were ambushed and killed in their patrol cars upon arrival at the scene of a reported shooting. Also in November, a police officer in the US state of New York died from gunshot wounds sustained in a shootout.
“I regard this increase with the utmost seriousness and the [DOJ] is working closely with our partners in the field to improve officers safety and resilience,” Lynch stated in the release on Monday. “In the days ahead, the [DOJ] will continue to assist state and local law enforcement officers in any way that we can to reduce the frequency and deadliness of these tragic incidents.”
