`Calexit`: California’s independence movement takes first step to secede from US
Members of the movement dubbed Yes California, which supports the state`s independence from Washington, proposed local authorities a document on independence referendum, local media reported.
The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported Monday that Yes California submitted a proposed ballot measure "Calexit: The California Independence Plebiscite of 2019" to the state attorney general.

The independence campaign decided to make such a decision after a victory of Donald Trump in recent presidential election, the newspaper said citing Marcus Ruiz Evans, the co-founder and vice president of the movement.

Yes California is the movement, which assumes that the southwestern US state "would be better off as an independent country." The activists suggest that the membership in the union harms the state`s interests in a number of spheres, including economy, security, immigration, environment and education among others.

On November 8, Trump managed to come ahead of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the US presidential elections, securing at least 290 electoral votes despite most of the analysts and opinion polls predicting his defeat. The majority of California`s voters backed Clinton in the recent vote.
