Karabakh conflict – a source of concern for Romanian diplomacy in EU - ambassador
The protracted conflicts in the Eastern Neighborhood, including Nagorno-Karabakh remain a source of concern and a focal point of attention for Romanian diplomacy in the European Union, said Romanian Ambassador to Azerbaijan.
According to the diplomat, ensuring a stable, safe and prosperous neighborhood is a top priority for Romania. To this end, Romania is active in maintaining an increased EU focus on the Eastern Neighborhood and supports the Eastern Partnership and the Black Sea Synergy as effective EU tools for the region, he noted.

The ambassador noted that Romania strongly supports the development of the EU-Azerbaijan relationship and hopes for the swift start of negotiations on a comprehensive and ambitious agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan.

Romania and Azerbaijan enjoy traditionally very close and friendly relationships, developing since 2009 within the framework of the bilateral strategic partnership, Iancu said, adding. “During the past three years there has been a steady increase of the bilateral trade turnover. For the whole of 2015 (according to Romanian data) the bilateral trade stood at 161.3 million US dollars, up 13% compared to 2014.”’

The newly-appointed Romanian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Dan Iancu, held a meeting with representatives of several media outlets in Baku Nov. 23 on the eve of 1 December – thee National Day of Romania.

First of December – the National Day of Romania – marks the day in 1918 when the People’s Assembly in the city of Alba Iulia (South-West Transylvania) unanimously adopted a Resolution stating the union of the provinces of Transylvania, Banat, Crisana and Maramures, all with Romanian-majority population, with the Kingdom of Romania.

The National Day is celebrated by Romanians all over the world as a symbol of solidarity, hope and triumph against adverse circumstances.
