The nomination document was prepared in a joint effort by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, the five countries’ ministries of culture, their national commissions for UNESCO, and experts in the area.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said that the Azerbaijani side nominated the document for the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage as a multinational tradition in order to prove the historical bond and cooperation between countries and nations as well as the confidence in UNESCO and the supreme principles of international law of the countries that presented the nomination, by demonstrating that culture is a unifying force and can be shared among nations.
With the support of President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, who has an exceptional role in developing the Azerbaijan-UNESCO cooperation and protecting and promoting Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage, Azerbaijan’s arts of Lahij coppersmith, mugham, ashuq, carpet-weaving, tar, kalaghai—apart from Lavash-making—are currently on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Chovkan, a traditional Karabakh horse riding game, on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
