`Statements made by Pope Francis in Baku reaffirmed importance of Azerbaijan`
The statements made by Pope Francis during his visit to Baku in October 2016 reaffirmed the importance of Azerbaijan, said the country’s President Ilham Aliyev.
He made the remarks at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Jan. 10, dedicated to the results of socioeconomic development of 2016 and objectives for the future, AzVision.az reported.

The head of state recalled that Baku hosted several important events in 2016 that was declared the Year of Multiculturalism in the country.

“In 2016, all the steps for the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor and Shah Deniz-2 projects were taken,” President Aliyev said, noting that a substantial part of the TANAP project was carried out.

“Last year was also remarkable with historical achievements of Azerbaijani athletes in the RIO 2016 Olympic Games,” he said.

With regard to the constitutional referendum held in Azerbaijan in September 2016, President Aliyev said that the referendum reflected the people’s will.

The president also said about 20 heads of state and government paid visits to Azerbaijan in 2016, and the country’s relations with international organizations were expanded.
