Italian foreign minister calls for Russia to be invited back into G8
Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday he would like to see Russia back in the G8 group of the world’s leading economies.
He noted that it still depends on Russia’s implementation of the Minsk Accords on the political settlement in Ukraine. Alfano said he was not sure if Moscow would rejoin the G7 nations before the group’s next summit in Italy scheduled for May 26-27.

In March 2014, following Crimea’s reunification with Russia, the other seven nations comprising the G8, including Italy, indefinitely suspended their participation in the group and agreed to return back to the previous G7 format. Russia formally became a member of the G7, thus extending it to the Group of Eight, in 1998.
