‘Academician Zarifa Aliyeva’ ferry brought ashore by a tugboat - UPDATED
“Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company” CJSC: The causes of the smoke rising from the ferry is being investigated.

The “Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company” CJSC has issued a statement in relation to the smoke rise from the “Academician Zarifa Aliyeva” ferry.

The CJSC told that at about 02:45pm on Thursday, smoke was seen rising from the electrical wires in the main engine section of the “Academician Zarifa Aliyeva” ferry, which belongs to the “Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping” CJSC, near the Khara Zira island in the Caspian Sea.



After timely intervention by the ship’s personnel, the smoke was prevented. It is said the ferry was not carrying any hazardous freight.

According to information, the “Academician Zarifa Aliyeva” ferry has already been moored at the coast accompanied by the “Irgiz” tugboat owned by the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company CJSC. Fortunately, the personnel are unhurt. An investigation is underway to determine possible causes.

Chairman of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company CJSC Rauf Valiyev and technical director Nurmuhammad Talibov are currently onboard the ship.

A fire broke out in the engine room of a cargo ship in the Caspian Sea on Jan. 12, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Emergency Situations told AzVision.az.

“The Crisis Management Center of the Emergency Situations Ministry received information on Jan 12 that a fire broke out in the engine room of the cargo ship named after academician Zarifa Aliyeva near Khara Zira Island in the Caspian Sea,” the ministry said.

“Vikhr-7 ship of the ministry’s State Fire Protection Service and a helicopter of the aviation group are involved in fire-fighting efforts,” the ministry added.

The relevant bodies were immediately informed of the accident. Additional information will be provided.
