Armenia commits provocation on border with Azerbaijan - PHOTOS

The Armenian side commited provocation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told on Jan. 17.

The Armenian Armed Forces inflicted strikes on the positions of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in Tovuz region using RPO-A Shmel in the morning on January 17.

No injuries were reported.

The defense ministry warned that the criminal military and political leadership of Armenia is fully responsible for any further incident and its consequences.

Note, the RPO-A Shmel ("Bumblebee") is a Russian man-portable thermobaric weapon, designed to give infantry an equalizer against enemy forces holed-up in buildings and fortified structures. Officially classified as a "Flamethrower" (Reaktivnyy Pekhotnyy Ognemet = Reactive Infantry Flamethrower), the RPO-A is technically a rocket launcher similar to RPG-series weapons, but it is nonetheless suitable for many of the missions traditionally requiring a flamethrower. It is issued primarily to paratroopers, engineers, and SOF units.

Exactly 30 years ago Soviet forces in Afghanistan received the first models of the latest Shmel ("Bumblebee") infantry flamethrower for testing. Firing fuel-air explosive rounds, the effect of the man-portable launcher was often as devastating as a 150 mm heavy artillery shell, and quickly earned it a nickname drawn from Islamic mythology: “Shaitan’s (the Devil’s) pipe”.
