Azerbaijan parliament appeals to int’l organizations for return of soldier’s body
Azerbaijan’s parliamentary Committee on Human Rights has sent an appeal to international organizations over Armenia’s reluctance to return the body of the Azerbaijani soldier killed during a provocation at the Azerbaijani-Armenia state border on Dec. 29, 2016.

AzVision.az presents the statement sent to the OSCE, the Council of Europe, and the ICRC.

“The Republic of Armenia, which has been keeping twenty percent of Azerbaijani territory under occupation for more than 25 years, continues to violate international law. Armenia’s refusal to return the body of Azerbaijani soldier Chingiz Gurbanov, who was killed fighting to prevent an Armenian diversion group from violating Azerbaijan’s state border on December 29 last year, is a clear example of it.

The Azerbaijani side has appealed to international organizations on the matter. The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland made two statements on January 9 and 11 this year calling for Armenia to return the soldier’s body immediately. They emphasized the necessity to respect international law and expressed their support for the just stance of the Azerbaijani side based on the agreements reached at the Astrakhan summit of the OSCE Minsk Group. Nevertheless, Armenia still goes on with its practice from the Karabakh war—revenging the dead bodies and trading over them, blatantly breaching the Geneva conventions and making baseless claims.

We consider that the international community must pay a reaction to the inhumane acts of the Republic of Armenia for ignoring international law, the 12 August 1949 Geneva conventions on protection of war victims, and other international acts, and must at the same time find a solution to this problem. Azerbaijan’s parliamentary Committee on Human Rights calls on concerned international organizations to take immediate actions and increase pressure on Armenia to return the dead body of the Azerbaijani soldier.”
