Even though her father has previously said his daughters won`t be going into politics, Malia Obama was recently spotted getting at least a little political. On Monday, the future Harvard University student attended a protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline in Park City, Utah. We guess Malia was more interested in attending the Sundance Film Festival than phase two of the Obama family vacation—the former First Family first headed to Palm Springs after Inauguration Day.

Activists have been protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline`s construction for a number of reasons over the past year, including its heavy environmental consequences and that it touches Native American land. President Obama`s administration worked hard to block both the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline`s construction, but now, in President Donald Trump`s first week in office, he has already made moves to reverse Obama`s work and resume construction.

Democracy Now spoke with actress and activist Shailene Woodley—who has been very involved in protesting the DAPL—about seeing the 18-year-old at the Sundance protest.

"It was incredible to see [Malia] there," Woodley said. "To witness a human being and a woman coming into her own outside of her family and outside of the attachments that this country has on her, but someone who’s willing to participate in democracy because she chooses to, because she recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn’t participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children."

According to Page Six, Malia has been spotted at several film screenings this week as part of the Sundance Film Festival. She`s also set to intern for Harvey Weinstein next month.
