Trump pledges support to ‘NATO ally’ Turkey in call with Erdogan

US President Donald Trump has expressed his support to Turkey, calling it “a strategic partner and NATO ally” in the first telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the White House reported on Tuesday.

Describing Turkish-US relations as “close” and “longstanding,” Trump praised Turkey’s efforts in combatting international terrorism, highlighting its role in the battle against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL).
