5.1 earthquake registered off the coast of Japan – USGS
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has been registered by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) 32 kilometers northeast of Iwaki, Japan.
There do not seem to have been any damage or injuries reported. Iwaki is located in Fukushima Prefecture on the east coast of Japan, which in 2011 was hit by a tsunami caused by the Tohoku earthquake, leading to a meltdown at a local nuclear power plant. Nearly half a million people were evacuated and a 20-kilometer exclusion zone was set up around the area. In November of 2016, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake also hit the region, causing a number of injuries.
