Due to Armenia’s occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands, the country faced the problem of refugees and IDPs immediately after gaining independence, Alasgarov said.
He noted that Azerbaijan, the population of which is currently some 10 million people, has been engaged in resolving the problems of refugees for more than twenty years, while Europe with its 500 million population finds it difficult to solve the problem of about two million migrants.
“We don’t complain, we only urge the international organizations to show a more fair, constructive and resolute approach to the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Alasgarov added.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
