Baku comments on EU and Washington’s statements on Afgan Mukhtarli’s arrest
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev has commented on the statements made the EU and the US Department of State on June 3 and 4 in connection with the arrest of Azerbaijani citizen Afgan Mukhtarli.
In their joint statement, dated 1 June 2017, the State Border Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan explained the reason for Afgan Mukhtarli’s arrest, Hajiyev told AzVision.az on Monday.

He said that Georgia’s relevant authorities also made a statement on this issue.

Hajiyev stressed that attempts to politicize this legal issue are wrong.

“Those who try to undermine Azerbaijan-Georgia relations by deliberately politicizing the issue will not succeed. The historical friendship and strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Georgia are based on the principles of common interests, mutually beneficial cooperation and respect, non-interference in each other’s domestic affairs, and not using their territory against each other,” he added.
